Interests: Exercise, cooking.travelling, theatre, film and art.

About me

I am Lynne Curran and I live in Stockport which is 11km from Manchester city centre and 9.5km from Manchester Airport.

Stockport is a market town with great transport links.  It takes around 15 minutes by train to Manchester, 35 minutes to Buxton in the Peak District and only 2 hours to London.

I live in a Victorian terraced house in a quiet residential road near to a local park and leisure centre.  There are two bedrooms for students and I can offer use of a private bathroom if required.

I have been teaching adults for approximately 14 years, mostly in community classes and colleges; I have also been teaching 1:1 and 2:1 at home for about 4 years.  I aim to provide stimulating, interesting lessons and as much opportunity as possible for students to become absorbed in the English language. It is always a really enjoyable experience and students are very motivated to learn and to experience the surrounding areas and the diverse culture of Manchester.  It’s very interesting for me to meet people from different cultures and be able to help them to improve their English.

I love the various cultural activities that Manchester offers, such as theatre, cinema, galleries and museums and I also enjoy getting out and about to surrounding areas that offer open space and nature such as Lyme Park, Tatton Park and Dunham Massey.  I enjoy taking guests around and showing students that Manchester and its surrounding areas is a great place to visit!

I enjoy keeping fit, cooking, reading, travelling and relaxing and really like eating out.  There is a wealth of different foods on offer in and around Manchester with the “Curry Mile” and Chinatown, as well as a thriving food and drink scene.

I look forward to welcoming you to my home.

About me

Hi my name is Julia Goodband and I am looking forward to welcoming guests into my cosy home situated on the edge of the beautiful Peak District, South Yorkshire. I am 59, and a retired teacher. I have two grown up children. My son lives nearby with his family and my daughter now works in north London. This means I can offer short stay visits to see the sights in London as I have access to free overnight accommodation down there!

I consider myself so lucky to live where I do in Sheffield. In one direction from my home we have breath-taking scenery and open countryside, whilst in the other direction, the culturally rich city of Sheffield offers excellent opportunities for sports, leisure, shopping and visitor attractions.

There are many historic places to visit locally, as well as old-fashioned and typically English villages nestling nearby in the Derbyshire Peak District. The famous ancient city of York is also within easy reach.

I have a B.Ed Hons degree in English and Educational Psychology, from Sheffield University and have taught continuously for 35 years, in Primary Education. I completed a CELTA course at Sheffield University last year and have since then worked as a volunteer ESL teacher in the city. I have also previously provided homestay accommodation for young foreign students visiting Sheffield Hallam University for Summer School English tuition.

I enjoy keeping fit, cycling and walking. I love music and the arts and enjoy visiting exhibitions, going to theatre and concerts. I play the piano, and guitar, (not to a high standard!) and enjoy singing. I also enjoy gardening. I love interior design, and cooking. I am happy to share all these things with my guest should the need arise. I also really enjoy being with and caring for my young granddaughter who is 16 months old at the moment. I love animals and until recently owned a dog.

As Sheffield was host city to the World Student Games some years ago, we have facilities for a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports. All of these facilities are within easy reach of my home. Sheffield is known as ‘The Green City’ because it has so many parks and gardens. We have a large park down the road with landscaped gardens, a stream, bowling, pitch- and -put golf, tennis courts and a fantastic café. It also has free facilities for skateboarding and basketball. Horse riding is available locally.

My home is a 3 bedroomed semi-detached property in the suburbs of Sheffield. It is a family home, which is well cared for and cosy. Within easy walking distance are bus routes which take you straight to the town centre or out into the countryside of Derbyshire. The student bedroom is spacious, newly refurbished and equipped with good study facilities. The bathroom is recently re-furbished and would be shared with the hostess.

About me

‘Hello. I’m Chris. I’m a friendly, sociable person offering a warm welcome and first-class hospitality. I have a degree in English as well as a Cambridge CELTA teaching qualification and have successfully completed Oxford TEFL courses in Teaching Business English and Teaching Pronunciation. My particular specialism is in Business English. Before entering the profession, I had a long career working at senior levels in a variety of roles in major UK-based financial institutions. I have developed and delivered tailored Business English courses to groups and individuals, including working with students on very specific professional needs and challenges. This approach is available to all my homestay students, as is more standardised Business English tuition. I’m equally happy and experienced in teaching General English at all levels of ability.

I live in the lovely city of Chester in the north west of England and have two grown up children now in other parts of the country. Chester is picturesque and steeped in history. There is easy access to great cities such as Liverpool and Manchester as well as the beautiful countryside of north Wales. My property is a good-sized apartment in an impressive 17th century listed building. I have two spare double bedrooms for student use. It is quiet and an excellent base from which to explore the area. Chester city centre and Chester Zoo – the largest zoo in the UK – are both within walking distance. I can provide any reasonable transportation required by car, including airport transfers and station pick-ups. I have experience of running student excursions throughout the north of England and north Wales and would be happy to structure a personalised social programme from a very attractive range of options.

In my spare time, I’m a local historian and run guided walks in my area. I also enjoy sport, reading, board games, quizzes and visits to museums, galleries and stately homes. These interests provide further opportunities for amusement and to develop social English and an awareness of British life and culture on the part of visiting students. I have a love of the English language and I’m passionate about teaching it, particularly in the enjoyable and authentic way that homestay affords.’

About me

My ESL experience was a stepping stone in my life as it placed me in a responsible position. I was working at the Regent Oxford where students pay a considerable amount in return for a high quality of teaching so I wanted their experience to be a positive one. Firstly I was thrown in at the deep end as it was my first teaching job and was offered the work on the basis of having hosted for the school for many years. I was asked to go back after my initial three weeks however at the time I had three daughters at home studying ‘A’ levels and GCSE’s plus four foreign language students one of whom was my pupil at the Regent! In the end I declined the teaching post working privately instead. During the following 5-6 years I taught beginners to advanced including the IELTS exam and the CAE. I devised the lesson according to the student’s needs/requirements.

Much of my time as a host for the various language schools I ‘taught” informally finding a common ground with almost all of those wishing to improve their English skills. I think having studied Japanese in a Japanese language school for over a year made me much more aware of how foreign students feel and how exposed and vulnerable a student is. Of course no language can be learned without making mistakes, that’s all part of the learning experience.

I recall my first class of students and their receptiveness to learn; realising I was their conduit to that process and that I had a duty and willingness to help them achieve their goals. It was very rewarding and exhilarating also.

We have a vast range of hobbies/interests which develop over the years: I am interested in Japanese culture and studied Asian art in Oxford as well as 20C English Literature and 19C Drama and Fiction. Japanese was an ongoing passion and I travelled there alone for three weeks, visiting many interesting places.

We both love travelling to Asia and I am due to fly out to Thailand in three weeks to visit our middle daughter Roseanna (28) for a couple of weeks. She has lived in Bangkok with her partner for the last three years working as a teacher and doing TV presenting. I was also in China earlier in the year with my husband on holiday.

I enjoy painting especially watercolour in addition to needle crafts.

I am very healthy and my passion has to be cooking. On the basis of having done a charity event at Virgin Money Sheffield and doing a huge amount of baking, I was subsequently asked to make a 1st year anniversary cake for them (see attached photo).

My husband, although a retired lecturer and social worker, will never actually ‘retire’. He is working on a sound system which he will market himself once it is completed. The amplifier he is currently building and is planning to write up the patents himself.

We love nature, especially animals, so generally I don’t really eat meat although will cook it for others. Nearby we have a park which leads into the Peak district. Actually we are less than three miles from Sheffield City Centre into which I regularly walk. However, take another direction and the countryside is on our doorstep, so we are very lucky.

We live in a residential professional area at the top of one of Sheffield’s seven hills. Luckily the bus stop is just two minutes from our door and runs every twenty minutes directly to the city centre a journey of between 15-20 mins.

Our nearest airport is Manchester just over an hour’s journey from Sheffield.

Here is truly a beautiful city little known by many visitors to the UK waiting to be explored. With so much to do and see it’s a place worth visiting for a memorable stay.

About me

Hello! I am Alison, a highly qualified ex Head of English with many years experience of teaching English at all levels and to all abilities, including students whose first language is not English.

I live in Alton in Staffordshire; a very beautiful village steeped in history on the edge of the Staffordshire Moorlands and close to the stunning landscape of The Peak District. It is fantastic walking country and also host to many stately homes, including Chatsworth. The theme park of Alton Towers with its stunning gardens, as well as its big rides, is one mile away. We are surrounded by the old market towns of Cheadle, Uttoxeter, Ashbourne and Leek, all ten to twenty minutes away and all different.

The nearest airports are Manchester and East Midlands.

I have one black rescue cat and a small wildlife pond – home to frogs and newts. I like to garden and my allotment is thirty seconds from my back door. Here I grow, organically, everything from soft fruits, as many greens as I can, through to root vegetables such as potatoes and radish. I love cooking and use my allotment produce all through the Summer and Autumn. I am also a keen baker of scrumptious gluten free cakes and desserts. One of my passions is Functional Medicine, so good quality, nutritious and delicious food is important to me.

Living in such a stunning area, I obviously love walking, foraging and exploring The Peaks. Winter evenings are often spent rag rugging, (making rugs from left over fabrics), mosaic making, reading, writing poetry, participating in the Community Pub’s Quiz nights, music nights and Book Club. All year round I attend regular classes in Pilates and QiGong (the base form of Tai Chi).

I also enjoy travelling and meeting new people and experiencing different cultures.

About me

My name is Katie and I live in the picturesque village of Appley Bridge; which is between Manchester and Liverpool in Northwest England. I live a 5 minute walk from a train station that runs directly to Manchester Airport (60 minutes) Central Manchester (55 minutes) Ormskirk (10 minutes) and Southport (30 minutes). The location also has buses that run to nearby towns of Wigan and Skelmersdale. What’s more, for students who wish to drive, I have two available parking spots at my house and the M6 motorway is a 5 minute drive from my house.

As for myself, in the past I worked as a police officer for 16 years and retired several years ago. During my time as a police officer I have developed a great deal of patience in dealing with people and solving problems. In recent years I have been able to transfer these skills to the profession of teaching and successfully taught adult ESL learners of Japanese and Chinese in intermediate/advanced conversation and vocabulary building. It is my firm belief that language learning occurs best in a usage based environment and that interacting with native speakers in their homes can not only quickly improve the students’ fluency in the target language but also enrich their cultural knowledge of the host country. In my free time, I enjoy reading, gardening, going the gym and travelling to historic sites around the country. I do not have any pets aside from the koi fish in the pond and the wild birds that visit my patio each morning for breakfast.

I very much look forward to sharing my own interests and home with students and help them reach the language goals they desire while making good friends.”
