About me

I am Lynne Curran and I live in Stockport which is 11km from Manchester city centre and 9.5km from Manchester Airport.

Stockport is a market town with great transport links.  It takes around 15 minutes by train to Manchester, 35 minutes to Buxton in the Peak District and only 2 hours to London.

I live in a Victorian terraced house in a quiet residential road near to a local park and leisure centre.  There are two bedrooms for students and I can offer use of a private bathroom if required.

I have been teaching adults for approximately 14 years, mostly in community classes and colleges; I have also been teaching 1:1 and 2:1 at home for about 4 years.  I aim to provide stimulating, interesting lessons and as much opportunity as possible for students to become absorbed in the English language. It is always a really enjoyable experience and students are very motivated to learn and to experience the surrounding areas and the diverse culture of Manchester.  It’s very interesting for me to meet people from different cultures and be able to help them to improve their English.

I love the various cultural activities that Manchester offers, such as theatre, cinema, galleries and museums and I also enjoy getting out and about to surrounding areas that offer open space and nature such as Lyme Park, Tatton Park and Dunham Massey.  I enjoy taking guests around and showing students that Manchester and its surrounding areas is a great place to visit!

I enjoy keeping fit, cooking, reading, travelling and relaxing and really like eating out.  There is a wealth of different foods on offer in and around Manchester with the “Curry Mile” and Chinatown, as well as a thriving food and drink scene.

I look forward to welcoming you to my home.

About me

Hi my name is Julia Goodband and I am looking forward to welcoming guests into my cosy home situated on the edge of the beautiful Peak District, South Yorkshire. I am 59, and a retired teacher. I have two grown up children. My son lives nearby with his family and my daughter now works in north London. This means I can offer short stay visits to see the sights in London as I have access to free overnight accommodation down there!

I consider myself so lucky to live where I do in Sheffield. In one direction from my home we have breath-taking scenery and open countryside, whilst in the other direction, the culturally rich city of Sheffield offers excellent opportunities for sports, leisure, shopping and visitor attractions.

There are many historic places to visit locally, as well as old-fashioned and typically English villages nestling nearby in the Derbyshire Peak District. The famous ancient city of York is also within easy reach.

I have a B.Ed Hons degree in English and Educational Psychology, from Sheffield University and have taught continuously for 35 years, in Primary Education. I completed a CELTA course at Sheffield University last year and have since then worked as a volunteer ESL teacher in the city. I have also previously provided homestay accommodation for young foreign students visiting Sheffield Hallam University for Summer School English tuition.

I enjoy keeping fit, cycling and walking. I love music and the arts and enjoy visiting exhibitions, going to theatre and concerts. I play the piano, and guitar, (not to a high standard!) and enjoy singing. I also enjoy gardening. I love interior design, and cooking. I am happy to share all these things with my guest should the need arise. I also really enjoy being with and caring for my young granddaughter who is 16 months old at the moment. I love animals and until recently owned a dog.

As Sheffield was host city to the World Student Games some years ago, we have facilities for a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports. All of these facilities are within easy reach of my home. Sheffield is known as ‘The Green City’ because it has so many parks and gardens. We have a large park down the road with landscaped gardens, a stream, bowling, pitch- and -put golf, tennis courts and a fantastic café. It also has free facilities for skateboarding and basketball. Horse riding is available locally.

My home is a 3 bedroomed semi-detached property in the suburbs of Sheffield. It is a family home, which is well cared for and cosy. Within easy walking distance are bus routes which take you straight to the town centre or out into the countryside of Derbyshire. The student bedroom is spacious, newly refurbished and equipped with good study facilities. The bathroom is recently re-furbished and would be shared with the hostess.

About me

Hi. I’m Chris. I’m qualified to teach English as a foreign language having successfully completed the Cambridge CELTA course at Liverpool International Language Academy, where I also do work on a voluntary basis. I have a Degree in English from Liverpool University too. Before qualifying to teach I had a long career in financial services, specialising in recruiting and mentoring young adults. Much of the mentoring work was done on a one-to-one basis and was aimed at helping to introduce young adults to the world of work. I live in the lovely city of Chester in the North West of England. It is picturesque and steeped in history. It also provides easy access to great cities such as Liverpool and Manchester and the beautiful countryside of north Wales. Liverpool Airport is approximately 15 miles away and Manchester Airport 30 miles away with motorway links to Chester.  My property is a good sized flat in a historic building with two spare double bedrooms for student use. It is quiet and an excellent base from which to explore the area. Chester city centre and Chester Zoo – the largest zoo in the UK – are both within walking distance. I can provide any transportation required by car. In my spare time, I’m a local historian and run guided walks in my area. I also enjoy visiting a local gym, cycling and chess. I’ve taught children to play chess in the past in a classroom environment. I have a love of the English language and I’m passionate about teaching it, particularly in the enjoyable and authentic way that homestay offers.’

I recommend this experience at the teachers home because this is a great opportunity to stay all day with an English speaker. In my opinion, the school should make opportunities for students to meet other foreign students to chat and to practice social life
