Christine Mihill Sharp- Homestay teacher in East Sussex

Location : Hastings – seaside town
Accommodation : Double room
Private bathroom
Family: Lives alone
Pets: None
Interests : Art, theatre, music, swimming, gardening, reading, museums
General English, Exam prep.and Business English

About me

My name is Christine (Chris) Mihill Sharp and I’m a professional English language and communications trainer. I specialise in helping adults – usually business executives – perfect and polish their English for a whole range of different communicative contexts: presentations, negotiations, business meetings, social meetings. Whether it’s improving your ability to write a clear, elegant email or report, helping your find ways to link ideas more fluently for that complex meeting, or simply allowing you time to build your confidence and communication skills, my focus is on you.
I have lived and worked overseas for many years, enjoy travelling and meeting people from a whole variety of backgrounds and cultures. I enjoy museums, art, theatre, gardening, swimming. One day I’d like to learn to sail! And I may get a dog later this year. Right now there are no pets and my sons are grown up, so no children either! But the house is warm, welcoming, calm and elegant. True, the garden needs a lot of work but making a garden is like improving a language – a little attention every day and both fluency and flowers bloom.
I’m a patient, courteous, respectful trainer – with a good sense of humour, not the world’s greatest cook I admit but not too awful. And since I’ve only recently moved from London to Hastings, we can explore this lovely and historic area together. My house is just 5 minutes from the sea – 7 from the station – with parks, art galleries, shops and cafes ’round the corner’.

About me

My name is Linda and I live with my partner Jig and two of my children. We also have a gorgeous black labrador. I am Mum to Georgina 24, Laurie 19 and Ayanna 9 years. The two youngest still live at home.
Qualified in TEFL teaching, I also home tutor my youngest daughter and have a wealth of experience in teaching and interacting with children of all ages and abilities As well as formal teaching I encourage full participation in all family activities which not only gives the pupils a feeling of inclusion but also helps them with their everyday English language learning. Dependent upon their interests this may include cooking, walking in the park, shopping or simply chatting or “chilling” with my other children and their friends. These are options and outside of the structured lessons the students are free to pursue their own interests if they wish but are always welcome to join in with us and are encouraged to do so.
We live in a Victorian house in St Leonards-on-Sea close to the town of Hastings in East Sussex where our guests have their own room and we also have plenty of space where they can study. Whilst we live in a quiet street there are shops nearby, a large park and we also have access to a large private garden where people of all ages can play and relax. There are regular buses to the town centre with all its facilities and the nearby train station means we are only 90 minutes from central London.I also try to structure our excursions around the individual interests of each student and take them to places that are not just educational but also interesting to them. I am fortunate that a close family friend who also has a TEFL qualification has been involved for many years in organising travel and excursions and has a keen interest in local history so is always on hand for that little bit extra.
We are a multi-cultural, well-travelled, family who delight in welcoming new people to our home and sharing our lives with them. We offer a fully immersive experience into British family life and culture and our students are encouraged to involve themselves in all aspects of our daily routine, during their stay they are part of our family. Over the years we have welcomed many students into our home, some more than once and have been very encouraged by the amount of positive feedback we receive.

I have taught in language schools and for commercial banks and manufacturing companies and have also taught specific English for telecommunications and flying terminology for air cadets.

I prepared students for English Language exams: First Certificate, Proficiency level, IELTS and PET both in class and on a one-to one basis.

Since returning home my wife and I have been able to rekindle our enthusiasm for the theatre, cinema and live music in Hastings. We both share a passion for good food and cooking, and have recently taken an interest in vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Sussex offers amazing walks, picnic areas and scenery on the coast, the Seven Sisters and the Sussex Downs, and inland we are close to Ashdown Forest and Bewl Water. There is also a good train service to London from Hastings.

Our house is situated near Alexandra Park overlooking the town, and it is a five-minute walk to the station and shopping centre. The view of the town and castle on the south side is amazing even on a cloudy day. We can offer a bright, comfortable bedroom, a quiet study, spacious living rooms, two bathrooms and a secluded garden to relax in and dine out, when it is warm and sunny.

Accommodation : Double room / Twin
Private bathroom
Family at home : Husband and twins 7 years old
Pets : Dog and Cat
Interests : Theatre, Glyndebourne, long walks, auctions, fantastic food, decent coffee and I am a wine connoisseur
General English, Business English and Exam prep

About me

My very first experience of teaching English as a foreign language came when aged nineteen I went to work as a nanny for an Italian family who lived near Sienna in Tuscany. Their house was remote but I was enlisted by the local villagers to teach them all English. I could not speak any Italian and this lead to many funny situations; I know exactly how it feels to be stranded in a foreign country without a word of the local language. I didn’t even know that Firenze and Florence were the same place! I had a remarkable experience and it has shaped my future understanding of being both student and teacher.

Both my husband and I have travelled considerably, he is a surgeon and spent a year working on the ambulances in Jerusalem as well as in Germany and Sierra Leone. He trained in Scotland where we hosted many language students from all over the world. Today we live in a medieval village an hour by train from London and 12 KM from Tunbridge Wells a famous regency spa town.

It is beautiful and friendly as well as on a good bus route. Brighton and Lewes are worth visiting too and as a wine student I can show you where all the local vineyards are – yes English wine exists! We have two seven year olds – twins and a docile dog plus two fat cats. All of the animals are extremely friendly but are not allowed anywhere near bedrooms.

I am an ex BBC Broadcast Journalist as well as an English literature teacher, I like to tailor my students language training to suit their interests because learning is simple when immersed in activities you love.

We are a friendly family but we can provide time and space for private study, the accommodation we have is on a separate floor to where we sleep and therefore students can have a degree of privacy when they need it.

We are also happy to drive students to and from the station for London excursions. The village has two pubs and a thriving arts community with plays, classical concerts and cinema nights a regular fixture, there is also a rugby, cricket and tennis club next door.

About me

My husband Paul and I have been hosting overseas students for over 16 years, first in London and now in East Grinstead. We were part host family programs with different schools of English in London and agents, offering half-board accommodation to students all year round.
When required I used to teach our students English lessons on a 1:1 basis mainly to those wanting to improve their English effectively during their visit to the UK.
In the summer of 2015 I worked for Culture Connection UK teaching English to a group of 45 French teenagers who were divided into 3 groups: beginners, intermediate and advance English levels. I enjoyed this experience very much as it gave me the opportunity not only to gear my lessons to different English levels but to interact with the students culture.

We live in East Grinstead, a town in the county of West Sussex. Pets : None
Interests: Music, knitting, movies , theatre, old motor bikes
General English,Exam prep. Business English

About me

I have always loved cooking. If you want to learn how to cook a few typically British foods, whilst you are staying with me, I’ll be delighted to assist!
My husband Paul and I love music. Sadly neither of us plays an instrument although we do have a piano for your use. Our daughter is the musician; she played the piano and clarinet and sang. Our record collection is made up of jazz and classical. I am a fan of popular music. Neither of us are sports people although if you want to watch
it there is a TV in bedroom 1 or bring along your tablet and you can watch in the comfort of your own room on our Wifi. Paul is into Vintage Motorbikes and Formula One Car Races. He’s into snooker too!
We both enjoy going out for a meal occasionally and visits to the theatre, this only happens on high days and holidays though. Our real pleasure is in going on holiday to Australia. We’ve been several times and plan to go to Queensland to see the Great Barrier Reef next yearOur lives changed irrevocably on the 13 November 2015, we became grandparents! To Honour this great occasion I took up knitting for the first time ever. It seems I have a talent for it although I have lots to learn still. Don’t worry you won’t be disturbed by crying babies our daughter and son in law both live in London.
The love of cooking led me to hotel school in my teens. From there I worked in very big hotels in London, mostly managing the front desk.It seems I am even better at administrative work than cooking.Eventually I qualified as a teacher and taught 16 plus to work in hotels, mostly preparing them for the front desk. I stayed at home for
a few years and brought up my children till I went back to work as a Sales and Marketing Manager in an Eastbourne hotel. I enjoyed the work but it was poorly paid. Taking the “bit between my teeth” I started my own recruitment business bringing mostly students from mainland Europe to work in hotels. It was nerve wracking to start but I soon turned
over a good profit.
If I hadn’t worked in hotels I should have become an accountant. I always follow the financial pages and have invested small amounts of money. At one point I belonged to an Investment Club. I love business and watch the News so that I can understand what is happening in the world, which will affect our lives. My other love is reading and so to
take this as far as I could I studied and gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature.
Last year we hosted Russian, Spanish, French and Croatian students, we enjoyed showing them around Sussex and telling stories relating to the area.. They all bring something new and stimulating to our lives. We hope you will be the next guest we host.

About me

Firstly please let us introduce ourselves. My name is Stephanie, I manage the Hastings and Rother school health team and the East Sussex Immunisation Service, as a registered nurse with a specialist degree in Community Public Health Nursing. My husbands name is Martyn , and he works as a Housing Support Officer in Eastbourne which is a town approximately 20 miles away. We have 6 children. Our 2 eldest boys are no longer living at home; Jack is a Royal Marine Commando based in Plymouth and Luke is studying Electronic Engineering at Portsmouth University. Our other children are Harmony aged 15, Emmie-Lou aged 13, William aged 11 and Tiggy aged 8. We also have a chocolate Labrador called Scooby.
We live in a village called Fairlight. Fairlight is 3 miles from Hastings and 5 miles from Rye. The village of Fairlight lies on a minor road between Ore, Pett and Winchelsea. It has the area known as “The Firehills” which forms part Hastings Country Park with 500 acres of cliff walks, unspoiled wooded countryside and magnificent coastal views. The parish church, built in 1845, has an 82 ft tower which is open to visitors during the summer. The village is mentioned in records of 1220 as Farlegh. William the Conquerer gave Fairlight Manor, which is now Stonelynk Farm, to a French Countess. In the days of smuggling, contraband goods were landed at Fairlight and brought inland by a tunnel. Stream House was used by smugglers which, in those days, was three cottages known as Stream Houses. At the turn of the century a local gun battery practised firing at Fairlight which probably gave rise to the name “The Firehills” and nearby Battery Hill.
As I’m sure you can imagine our house is always busy with lots of fun and laughter. The children are very sporty, so we can often be found at athletics events across the country or watching swimming lessons. As a family we enjoy spending time outdoors, walking around the local countryside and beaches.

About me

I live in St. Leonards-On-Sea / Hastings with my partner Saxon and my 15 year old son Connor and our two cats. I also have twin sons who are twenty-sx and living in their own homes with their families. The house is a beautiful Victorian, seven bedroom, semi-detached property. We live a short ten minutes walk from the seafront and a twenty minute walk from Hastings Old town where there is a bustling cafe and music culture and historical ambiance.
Alongside a traditional seaside resort lies a thriving and varied niche shopping area with a great atmosphere. There are excellent transport links to London and our nearest airport Gatwick which are only about an hour and a half away by train. Other great towns and places to visit are also only an hour or less away. The area is steeped in history and character.

I have been a primary school teacher since 1999 and have taught children from the age of four to 11. I have been supply teaching for the last two years working regularly in a few local schools. I teach English to speakers of other languages and have done since 2013. I have taught home stay students of all ages from 15 to 45 and enjoy sharing a bit of our history, art and culture with them as well as making them a part of our family during their stay.

My hobbies are swimming, walking, art, history, baking and spending time with family and friends.
