About me

Homestay teachers in Scotland and Wales
I have lived with my family in Largs for 12 years. I love living by the sea and our house overlooks the beach, over the water to views of the islands Cumbrae, Arran and Bute. Once we even saw a humpback whale in Largs Bay! But more often it is views of sailboats and seagulls. In the summer, Largs is a popular destination for Scottish people to visit the beach and eat ice cream. There are castles (Kilburn Castle, Portencross Castle) and more beaches nearby, you can go cycling around Cumbrae which is only a 15 minute ferry ride away. My wife Nicky and I look after our three children Molly (13), John (11) and George(10). We like to play board games, walk our dog Clyde on the beach and watch TV together. I am a high school English teacher, so I read a lot of young adult fiction, and if the weather is good, I like working in my garden. I have just started teaching English as a Second Language, but I have been teaching English at High School level for five years now. We have had many German and Czech au pairs stay with us, and I understand what a new speaker/writer of English will need. I love having visitors and we enjoying welcoming people from all over the world to our home. We have a cat and a very friendly Golden Retriever – but neither of them will bother you if you don’t want them to. We are a mostly non-drinking family and we love to cook! We are a 30 minute drive from Glasgow Airport and Prestwick airport, and I would charge £20 each direction for transfers.

We are a family composed of my wife, Elizabeth, our son Jose (20) and me. Our two other older sons don´t live with us anymore.

We have been hosting foreign students in our home for the last 4 years, after our older son moved away. We have had students from Morocco, England, Italy, India, Bulgaria, Scotland and France. Our experience with hosting fooreign students has been very rewarding, and in a way it reminds us of our own student days.

Regarding my experience in teaching ESOL, I hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Education Studies and TESOL (Stirling), and I have been teaching 1:1 for 12 years. I can teach general English, exam preparation, business English and Scientific English. My first degree is in Marine Sciences (BSc, Spain) and I have a second degree in Economics and Management (BSc, London) and a Master in Aquaculture (Stirling).

For hobbies, I like going to the countryside for hiking, watching movies, reading and traveling.

Stirling is a very nice city located in central Scotland, just 45 minutes from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Glasgow Airport and Edinburgh Airport are just 40 minutes drive. We can pick up the students in Stirling bus or train station free of charge, or we can pick up the students in Edinburgh/Glasgow Airport for an additional fee. Stirling is home to Stirling University, a well renown University very popular among foreign students. It is close to many attractions, and there are beautiful natural spaces around.

About me

Homestay teachers in Scotland and Wales

I am bilingual English/German and have been a language teacher for eighteen years. My qualifications include a MA (hons) English Language, a PGCE (MFL) and most recently a TEFL. We have been hosting guests from abroad for many years but increasingly so since moving to our current home three years ago. My husband is a historian and we run a busy household with four children: Oskar (14), Ruben (12), Lucy (9) and Albert (5). Our house is a large Georgian villa in the small and pretty town of Duns in the Scottish Borders, close to some of Scotland’s best beaches, abbeys and country houses (about one hour by car south-east of Edinburgh). We have a large garden surrounding the house which is home to lots of flowers, trees, wildlife and our chickens. We very much enjoy meeting new people from other countries, learning things about their culture and teaching them about ours. I am particularly into patchwork and quilting and offer sewing sessions. The children all play musical instruments. As a family, we also enjoy hill walking, ceilidh dancing, watching films and playing board games.

About me

Homestay teachers in Scotland and wales

I taught students from all over the world in New Zealand for fifteen years.  I have taught a range of courses including General English at all levels, Cambridge exam courses, IELTS and teacher training courses.  I love meeting people from different cultures and helping them improve their English.  I have stayed in touch with many ex students and since moving back home to the UK would love to welcome students into our home.  I am originally from Newcastle and my husband is Australian.  My husband and I live in a very beautiful part of Scotland, famous for its stunning scenery of lochs and mountains.  We live in Port Appin which has a small village shop, craft shop and two very nice hotels with restaurants and bars.  The area is very popular with tourists.  Our house is spacious and warm with a beautiful garden.  We are about twenty five minutes from Oban which has a train station, lots of shops and cafes and is the main gateway to the Highlands and Islands.  The nearest airport is Glasgow which is about two and a half hours away. My husband and I love walking and going out in our boat.  The loch is two minutes away.  We both enjoy music and I love pottering about in the garden and reading.

About me

I obtained a CELTA in 1999 and worked in Japan for 2 years in private language schools, general English, exams (IELTS, FCE etc), children, and business and I also became an area supervisor in Ome district, organising English teachers in Japanese primary schools. I then taught for 2 years in Mozambique (VSO) where I was teaching trainee teachers both to learn AND teach English. After a break we returned to Scotland where, for the past 10 years, I have been working as a Primary school teacher (supply) and having Homestay students for English. Students are from all over the world and all ages, although the majority are adults, and courses include General English, exam preparation, business  .

We (my husband Pedro ,who is Cuban and a research scientist) and myself live in Ratho, a small village which is on the outskirts of Edinburgh ( 30 minutes to city centre) in an old cottage, though modern interior, and a large garden. Gardening is my passion and other interests include singing, natural history, walking in the hills (plenty of these around ), yoga  and books, poetry etc.. I have 2 daughters, grown-up with families and 3 grandchildren. One daughter (Lucy) lives in Angus and , together with her husband – a well-known chef – have a vibrant banqueting and events company and my other daughter -Jenny , , has an English school in Edinburgh.

Ratho has a canal – good for kayaking, bargeing etc and also EICA – the biggest indoor climbing arena  in  Europe, nearby there are 2 country parks, lots of golf courses and, being Scotland, many historical sites – Roslyn Chapel – from the DA Vinci book and film – is 25 minutes away, and countless other places of interest-  I often take students into Fife , Stirling and Glasgow as well as Edinburgh.

We live in a bright and comfortable 4 bed modern house in Crieff, with a dedicated study/teaching room for our students.  We have one double and one twin room for students.

Crieff is a traditional Scottish town, set in the midst of hills and lakes on the edge of the Highlands of Scotland.  Many sporting and cultural activities are available in the town and nearby.  We are near to the larger historic towns of Stirling and Perth, and both Edinburgh and Glasgow are within day trip distance.

I am a qualified and experienced teacher of English as a foreign language – I have taught in language schools in England, and on a one-to-one basis in China and Taiwan. I have taught and hosted many teenagers and adults at our homestay in Crieff. Visitors are fully included in our family life and we offer a good variety of trips and activities around central Scotland and the Highlands.

I studied Chinese at Oxford University, and later studied law and practised as an employment law solicitor.

I have a recent clear DBS check (UK check for those working with children).

I enjoy cooking, both British and international, walking in the beautiful local countryside, photography, theatre and cinema.

My older daughter is at boarding school on a music scholarship, and is usually home in the holidays. She plays violin, piano and trombone, and sings.  She loves acting, musical theatre and reading.

My younger daughter attends a local school.  She plays the cornet (trumpet) and enjoys outdoor pursuits, musical theatre and cooking.

About me

Sue and John would be happy to welcome you to our warm and modern house in the holiday town of Callander, set amidst farms and forest, hills and lochs (lakes).

John is a graduate of Edinburgh University in Social and Economic History (specialising in the history of sport), a trained language teacher (CELTA Cambridge) and also a trained Scottish tourist guide, so he can help you improve your English and show you Scotland and its history and culture. He is a gentle and patient teacher who prefers to use humour and his own enthusiasm for language, without losing the academic rigour which will enable you to improve greatly in ability and confidence.

Sue is a great lover of traditional Scottish music, an excellent cook and has lots of experience in welcoming visitors. She can introduce you to lots of new Scottish music and show you how to cook Scottish dishes. Our house is full of laughter and music, so between us, we can ensure that you have a memorable stay in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and learn some English!

Our house has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. It was built in 2004, and has a large garden, right beside an ancient wood, 10 minutes walk from Callander town centre. Both children are away at university.  You would have your own room with a small double bed (120cm x 195cm), storage facilities, a study desk and wifi. Your own bathroom is the room next door.

Callander is an attractive town in an area of the Central Highlands called The Trossachs, which is very popular with visitors from all parts of the world. We are surrounded by mountains and lochs, and there are walking and bike paths in the forest and Canadian canoeing on the water, all easily accessible from our house. You can walk to the town with its shops, cafes and restaurants in 10 minutes, while only 5 minutes walk away is a leisure centre with swimming pool, sports fields and a gym. There is an excellent golf course and trout fishing in the river.

We can arrange excursions to many places in the area, including Doune Castle (the Castle Leoch of the television series “Outlander” and Winterfell in “Game of Thrones”) (10km away), to Deanston whisky distillery (if you are over 18) (10 km away), to Stirling (with its castle, cinema and greater range of shops) (20 km away) and Edinburgh or Glasgow (both cities about 60 km away).

Before becoming a full-time English teacher, I was a solicitor for 17 years, specialising in  personal injury and clinical negligence. During my legal career I took an 8 month sabbatical to teach English on a voluntary basis in Tanzania. I enjoyed my experience so much that I continued to return to Tanzania annually for 12 years during holidays and sabbaticals. I have now been teaching English on a full-time basis for the past 6 years. Although I specialise in teaching English on a one to one basis, I have continued to volunteer abroad and have taught business English in Madagascar and general English in Cambodia and Guatemala.

I thoroughly enjoy welcoming students and guests to my home and introducing them to Welsh culture. I carry out an assessment and agree a study plan with every student at the beginning of each course to ensure students benefit as much as possible from their stay. My lessons are well planned and diverse.

We can accommodate up to 5 students in a double, en-suite room, twin room and single bedroom.  I am vegetarian and enjoy cooking meals that students may not have experienced before. I am also happy to cook non-vegetarian dishes  on occasion.

About me

Homestay teachers in Scotland and Wales

I have lived in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales for nearly twenty years and have loved every minute of it. Although it is a capital city it is a small city and very easy to get around. There is no metro here, we are just about a 20-minute walk away from the centre of Cardiff, also there is a very good bus service going to and from the centre. I have seen Cardiff grow and grow since living here. It has a lot to offer including many well-known high street shops and restaurants.

We are very lucky where we live as just a short walk is one of the many famous roads of Cardiff, Albany road. On Albany road you are spoilt for choice, there are a wide range of eateries, charity shops and a local farmer’s market every Saturday. A short walk from home is Roath Recreational ground where you can see local teams play football most weekends. There is a play area, a library and tennis courts as well as a bowling green. A short walk on leads to Roath Lake where you often will see many people out walking especially on a Sunday after Sunday Lunch. This is where we walk the dog, Narla (very soft and good natured)

I have 12 years teaching experience a wide range of subjects including the English and Welsh language. I have taught within the same school for over 10 years. I have also taught 1:1 as a tutor for over 12 years. My wife, Jessica, is also an English teacher, she has been teaching for over 18 years. Together we have been a host family with the ‘Stephanie Jones – School of English’ for 3 years looking after students for very short stays. These students are mainly from France and Spain. I am experienced at matching my teaching style to individual learners, to meet the specific requirements of their syllabus, tests and assessment objectives.

My hobbies include running, walking the dog at the nearby beach at Barry or in the forest at Castell Coch, eating out and the cinema. My interests include going to live music concerts, theatre, camping. We have two children in the household, two boys who are currently 12 and 9. They are very different from one another, but they both love cooking, the dog and of course their technology!

We can accommodate up to two students at any one time as long as they don’t mind sharing.

Finally, the nearest airport is Cardiff Airport which is approx. 30 minutes away. The city of Bristol is about 50 minutes away.

Our students' experiences

We recommend to anyone interested in living the language, tradition and culture in this lovely land.

I am Erika, sixteen years old and visited England and stayed at Cathie's house. The most interesting thing is horse riding. I learnt "exercise" "walk" and "trot" and could ride the no saddle horse. I was very excited. Before that I studied about the horse . In the lessons I read books and did drawings of the horse. I like Sandwich and this house and want to come back again.

MAY 2018

I had a very pleasant stay with Samantha and her family. I had lots of opportunity to meet interesting people and practice my English.
