Homestay teachers in London

My name is Marie Probert and I have been an English language home tutor for almost 20 years. I am now semi retired. I have taught English in schools, at home on a private basis and as voluntary work in the Far East. I am now concentrating on liaising between students and teacher to ensure that teacher and students are suitably matched.

Selecting the best English homestay tutors

I have a good understanding of what students are looking for, having had experience across many cultures. I have personally interviewed and verified every English language teacher listed on my website. I have visited and inspected all the accommodation offered. All teachers on my site are highly qualified and experienced in one-to-one home tuition and in homestay hosting. To work with Homestay English teaching, all teachers must meet a strict criteria. The same applies for the accommodation.

Interests : Home baking, water colour painting, gardening, going to the gym, cinema, country walks, visiting museums and gardens
 General English

About me

We are a married couple who live in a lovely ‘arts and crafts’ house in Mill Hill in north London that’s been in the family for nearly 90 years, and which we’ve recently restored.  It’s really easy to get into central London from us by bus or train.  We can be easily reached from all the London airports by public transport.  The advantage of Mill Hill is you can visit beautiful and interesting places outside central London that foreign visitors get to see, such as the RAF museum in Hendon, St. Albans, with its Roman theatre and abbey, and of course Harry Potter world.

If you stay with us, we can show you the best that London has to offer, such as the world-famous Kew Gardens, its museums and art galleries, some of its lesser known shops and pubs, and much more besides.

I’ve been a teacher in secondary schools and we’ve lots of hobbies and interests. These include home baking, country walks (I have just walked the 800 km Camino de Santiago in Spain), watching films, and learning languages.  My wife Suzie is a landscape architect and adores our lovely garden and looking for rare and beautiful plants.

About me

I have lived in Crystal Palace for 30 years and have three adult children.  Bill lives with me and my son Matt for some of the time. I have enjoyed hosting over 100 students from 2004 till 2016.  We do not have any pets.  We have a large garden and birds, foxes and squirrels visit and entertain us from the window of our large conservatory.  The house has four large bedrooms and two are available for up to two visiting students.
Crystal Palace is just outside of central London and in the borough of London South East London 19. or SE19.  It is a lovely and lively place to live with its many parks and restaurants.  It is home to Crystal Palace sport centre and historic dinosaur park.
We are not too far from central London, a buses from outside of the home takes you to one of two underground stations, Clapham or Brixton where travel around the London capital is easy.
We enjoy hosting foreign students and I do especially.  I have not  taught English formally  however I have spent many occasions chatting to the students that I was hosting for a local school teaching English to non speakers.
I have recently passed a Teaching English to Foreign Students course,  I am now prepared to help  students improve their spoken and written English.  I have retired from my  profession as an early years educator and can now devote my time to that of hosting students in a more professional capacity.
We are a friendly home and have welcomed many foreign students for many years.  The students have filled in my guest book with some lovely memories and comment, it would be nice if your name could be added to my book too.
Gatwick is the nearest airport, from Gatwick airport it is a short 15 minute train ride to East Croydon Station, then a taxi to my home is just another 15minutes.

Location: Beckenham, South
Accommodation : A double/ single room
Shared bathroom
Family : Wife
Pets : None
Interests : Music, cooking, socialising, reading, watching rugby
General English, Exam prep.Business English

About me

I am a great fan of all types of music and subscribe to two music magazines. Cooking is a hobby and I have hundreds of cookbooks so no worries about the food!. I like and am quite knowledgeable about beers and wines; from this you can guess that I enjoy the company of others. I also enjoy travel and the internet has enabled me to stay in touch with an international circle of friends. In addition to music, food and socialising, I like reading; I subscribe to Private Eye and The Week and in recent years read more factual material than the science fiction I used to read as a teenager. Talking of my teens, I used to love playing basketball and obtained a coaching qualification. My only current sporting interest is watching Wales play rugby on TV. Finally, I have been researching my family tree for more than 30 years.

Beckenham is in the London borough of Bromley. Barnmead Road is a quiet ‘unadopted’ road . Despite looking like we’re in the countryside we have wonderful transport links. Kent House station (to Victoria less than 20 minutes) is in our road; Clock House station (to London Bridge/Charing Cross) is 5 minutes walk and Beckenham Road tram stop (to East Croydon and change for Gatwick airport) is at the top of our road. Beckenham is a safe area with pubs, restaurants, parks, etc.

I’ve always been fascinated by languages, about 15 years ago, I did a degree in linguistics and French, then a masters in linguistics and then a CELTA. I taught briefly at a local school of English and then started doing ‘home stay’ 8 years ago and my wife Merle and I have hosted lots of students from all over the world (including Italians, French, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, etc.). Please note I don’t take children or beginners. My lessons are fun and I’ve remained friends with many of my students.

Location: Richmond on thames
Accommodation : Double/Twin room
Private bathroom
Family at home : Lives alone
Pets: None
Interests : Live music (most genres), theatre, exhibitions, photography, languages, food (cooking it and eating it), motorcycles, guitar
General English

About me

My name is Paul, and home is a beautifully restored 18th century cottage in a particularly picturesque part of southwest London, Richmond-upon-Thames. This part of London is best known for its 955 hectare royal park, with its resident herd of red deer, and from the top of Richmond Hill – for one of the best views of the river Thames anywhere in the whole of London. Most of Richmond is an architectural conservation area. Richmond Green for example, has been described as “one of the most beautiful urban greens surviving anywhere in England”. I would not disagree.

I am university educated, and have been working in the oil and gas exploration industry for 40 years, a profession that has taken me all over the world. To name but a few countries in which I have worked, Russia (Siberia), Turkey, Poland, Uganda, Tanzania, Gabon, Brasil, Indonesia, Iran, Morocco, and China. There’s nothing I enjoy more than engaging with other nationalities, languages, and cultures. I speak reasonable French and Polish.

I obtained a CELTA teaching qualification in early 2016, with a view to spending less time overseas and more time at home in London teaching English from home. For the academic year 2017/2018 I taught full time at a language school in southern Poland, mixed age groups (12-14, 16, 18, adults). I also gained some practical experience of ‘corporate’ teaching, conducting weekly conversational classes for employees at the premises of a local manufacturing company.

All my work related travels over the years have served to make me appreciate my hometown of London more than ever. My interests revolve mainly around music and the arts, attending live music events, theatre, exhibitions and galleries, markets. I love dogs, but currently don’t have one of my own. I have a fantastic arrangement with my neighbours however; I simply borrow theirs whenever I want – which is very frequently. Other interests are food (cooking it and eating it), photography, riding my motorcycle, playing guitar, and maintaining my (big) garden

Paul Garton : Homestay teachers in Hertfordshire

Location: Bushey
Accommodation : Double/Twin room
 Shared bathroom
Family at home : Wife
Pets: None
Interests :Theatre (especially musicals); history (European and Ancient Greece); travel; wine; walking; English literature
General English

About me

I live in the pleasant little town of Bushey, just over the Herts border from the London borough of Harrow. It’s semi-rural, with some lovely walks through Merry Hill open space and along the Grand Union Canal to the gorgeous, historic market towns of Berkhamsted and Tring. Our nearest large town is Watford, which has decent shops and restaurants. I live with Paula, my wife of (scratch head) 15 years. She is originally from Colombia and works as a Theatre Nurse for Imperial NHS Trust in London. We own a modern (built 2014), 2-bed flat. The rooms are of a good size, allowing in plenty of light (when it is light) and an attractive lay-out. The student room is some 12′ by 9′ with a double bed, a large unit with six big drawers and a smaller unit of three drawers. We have one bathroom in the property. At the back we have our own parking space. I have attached some photos of the interior and exterior of the property.

From Bushey station (5 minute walk) there are direct services to Euston every half hour, the journey taking just 16 minutes. Services to and from Euston run until midnight, beyond which time it is still possible to get back here via Stanmore, on the Jubilee Line. The nearest airports are Luton and Heathrow. Luton is 25 minutes away by car and a taxi costs £33. It is possible to get here from the airport using public transport but it’s a bit of a long way round, going into Euston first and then coming back up here, and for £10 difference it’s not worth the bother. Heathrow is half an hour by taxi (£35) or 1 hour 20 by public transport for the cost of a day travelcard (£12).

After my CELTA at IH London in 2009 I taught Esol to students on a private basis and Eal each summer for language schools such as LSC and Kaplan. I joined Fleet Tutors in 2015 as an Esol and History tutor, since when I have taught privately and government funded students on a regular basis. In addition, after completing a DTLLS in 2015 I was awarded  QTLS by the Society for Education and Training in 2016. Last year I joined InTuition as a homestay tutor and hosted successfully over Christmas, delivering an advanced course.

Away from teaching I enjoy going to the Theatre, exploring London and walking in the countryside around Herts and Bucks. I look forward to hosting students, teaching them and showing them our attractive part of the world. I am acquainted with one of the tutors I saw on the webpage, Laureen Bygrave, who lives along from me in Oxhey or Carpenders Park.

Richard Williams: Homestay teachers in Surrey

Location: Wallington
Accommodation : Double/Twin room

Family at home : Wife
Pets: None
Interests : Food, wine, conversation, theatre, art galleries, country walks, golf. tennis
General English, Exam prep.Business English

About me

I have an ESOL CELTA 5 qualification from International House and a degree in English from Bristol University. I spent the summer of 2011 working at the LTC school in Eastbourne, and part of the following summer teaching at Ovingdean Hall, near Brighton. For the last five years I have taught homestay students on a one-to-one basis.

I have spent most of my life in the book publishing industry, as an editor and writer, but also worked as Production Director for a company making award-winning training videos and e-learning. I used to write as a freelance for the Sunday Times, and still work as a journalist writing articles on aviation and travel.

My wife Sue and I enjoy food, wine, conversation, theatre, art galleries, country walks, and visits to our two children, who are both married and living locally. We grow a lot of our own vegetables in our garden, and both enjoy cooking and hosting barbecues in the summer.

Sue plays tennis regularly at a local sports club, and I play a weekly round of golf. We regularly go on long country walks, as we live in the southern suburbs of London, on the edge of the beautiful Surrey countryside. We also go up to the West End regularly by train from nearby Purley station.

We have been hosting students successfully for five years, and they seem to enjoy our particular brand of friendly hospitality. Our guest book is full of kind comments from satisfied customers!

Teaching: I prefer to offer a programme based on three hours’ tuition a day, which leaves the afternoons free for private study, or trips up to central London. The course begins with a test to determine the student’s level, and an assessment of his or her learning needs. Then the lessons are tailored exactly to the student’s requirements, targeting particular areas of grammar or lexis that need attention. I specialise in business students, and can give special help on topics such as interviews, meetings, presentations, appraisals, telephone calls, etc.

Pets: Dog
Interests : Badminton, walking my dog independently and with walking groups,  music venues, comedy nights and theatre.

About me

Hi my name is Janice , I am a widow, a mother of two and a nana to 3 gorgeous grandchildren. As my children have their own homes I now live with my dog, Dudley in a four bedroomed house in Frimley, however I share my house with a long term lodger, a Headmistress of two local schools.

Prior to qualifying as a TESOL tutor in 2009 my background was in accounts, however I have always loved traveling, meeting people and welcoming them into my home.  I have volunteered at an Adult Education Centre, taught UK summer schools, couple of schools in Austria & have also worked with young offenders.  Overall my style of teaching is relaxed, conversational, fun and targeted to the student’s interests.

I enjoy cooking and would be happy to accommodate individual tastes.  Apart from travelling, my hobbies are playing badminton, walking, meeting friends and listening to music.

Frimley is only 35 minutes from Heathrow Airport, and is close to woods, canals, rivers and fields which are great for walking.  Within easy reach there are golf courses, outside tennis courts and a sports centre which has lots of activities including a swimming pool.  Slightly further afield is Go Ape (an adventure activity where you explore the forest canopy), crazy golf, footgolf and Coral Reef (leisure pool with slides and rapids). For something more a bit more relaxing there are many public gardens and a number historical properties in the surrounding area.  Also Frimley is ideally situated for day trips to London, Windsor, Southampton and Guildford to name but a few. If you choose to stay  with me, I would hope that you will feel relaxed and very welcome, basically a home from home.

Our students' experiences

Lee is a very good teacher for me because he has taught me very patiently - particularly pronunciation and grammar. I am convinced that speaking English precisely is very important. After I go back to Japan I will continue to study English the way Lee taught me. I have also learnt about politics, culture and history of Britain through lessons and activities.                      I am very grateful to Lee and his family.
